Habitat

Tropical lowland rainforests, dense bamboo thickets, and tall grass areas in Ujung Kulon National Park, Java, Indonesia. Prefers areas with water sources and mud wallows.

Threats

• Extremely small population size
• Habitat loss due to invasive plants
• Natural disasters (tsunamis, earthquakes)
• Disease transmission from domestic animals
• Genetic bottleneck and inbreeding

Conservation efforts

Protected within Ujung Kulon National Park with 24/7 monitoring by Rhino Protection Units. Habitat management programs control invasive Arenga palm. Plans for establishing a second population in a suitable habitat are underway to reduce extinction risk.
